hi and congrats on your newsletter! I discovered it since you read mine. I am curious, who are you and where do you run? You leave no clues about your identity on the About page. If you are intentionally private, I totally respect that, I just like to know the name and basics of an author I read. Happy new year.

Hi, Sarah. Thank you! Yes, I have intentionally left out any details about myself. Not because I’m trying to hide, I just prefer that it doesn’t matter who I am. I’m not sure if that makes sense…

But since you asked (which, huh, I’d never really thought about what I’d say if somebody were to ask!), my name is Polly. I run in Europe, mainly in the city where I’ve been living for a few years now, and in the mountains as often as I can. I’m in my late 30s and I’ll be celebrating my 10th running anniversary in 2023. Solid mid-packer with a couple of non-competitive podiums and as many DFLs to my name. One DNF. I often run with cat/dog treats in my pockets. And I’ve been reading your (old) blog since forever—something about Jack Daniels was, I believe, one of the first articles I read on there.

You had me at hello! I’m training for my first 50k and so glad I came across your post. I like your approach and mindset towards running. Looking forward to reading your great writing to keep me inspired to reach my 50k “gateway-drug” goal! ✊🏽

Thank you so much for the kind words! What type of race is it—road, trail, flat, hilly?

I’m all about trail running and a glutton for punishment so the more elevation the better. Right now I’m signed up for The Canyons 50k in Auburn, CA in April. Although I need to get through a 35k race next up in January.

How about you? Are you training for a race?

Yesss, trails and elevation FTW!

As for me, I don’t have a specific race for which to train currently, although I suspect that won’t last much longer.

Enjoy your training and have fun at that January race!

Reading this over a year later 😂 I am now also training for my first 50k in the UP of Michigan. The race is described as brutal and beautiful. Here we go. Great writing here - keep it up!
